BOTOX® – Time to reverse those lines!
BOTOX® is no longer just for Hollywood stars! Today, more men and women are enjoying the benefits to help reduce facial wrinkles and enjoy smoother skin. At Eclipse MedSpa we want to review questions often asked about this procedure.
1. What is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is a purified protein that is used to relax muscles. It is used medically to treat certain muscular conditions and cosmetically to remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles. The FDA first approved the usage in the late 1980s when it was discovered that BOTOX® could stop ailments such as blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking) and strabismus (lazy eye). Cosmetic physicians have been using BOTOX® for years to successfully treat wrinkles and facial creases. BOTOX® is approved for treatment of frown lines on the forehead, axillary hyperhidrosis (increase sweating in the armpits) and reducing crow’s feet.
2. How does BOTOX® work?
BOTOX® blocks the signal from the nerve to the muscles. The injected muscle can no longer contract (tighten) as forcefully, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. Wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity will often not respond to BOTOX®. Please note, BOTOX® is NOT a facial filler, is merely relaxes the muscles that are creating facial wrinkles.
3. How long will my results last?
It depends on the dose as well as the patient’s metabolism. With a typical dose and patient, the product is injected, with the maximal effect at four weeks. Some patients say at eight weeks, the movement starts to slowly return and at twelve weeks, there is about 50 of normal movement back and at sixteen weeks there is approximately 80 of normal movement back. Our Eclipse MedSpa aesthetician can create a customized plan just for your needs.
4. Are there any side effects?
Being a medical procedure, there are side effects and risks. The most common ones are red dots at the injection sites, small areas of swelling at the injection sites, bruising and a mild headache. The more significant side effects are eyebrow or eyelid droop, but fortunately, these are uncommon. If you are worried, Eclipse MedSpa will discuss any of your concerns to see if this is the right procedure for you.
5. What is the difference between muscle relaxants and dermal fillers?
The main difference is BOTOX® will relax the muscles while dermal fillers are gels placed under the skin to volumise and fill lines, wrinkles and folds. Fillers are also used to augment certain areas of the face such as the chin, lips and cheeks.
